Compressors are model and appliance specific. The compressor must match the refrigerant type, voltage, and capacity of the original unit. Match your model number and the compressor part number before ordering. Send us a photo of the old compressor with its data plate visible and we will confirm the right replacement.

How to find the right replacement compressor

Getting the wrong compressor is expensive and means the appliance won't work correctly even after fitting. The compressor data plate has the information you need.

Before you order, check three things:

The compressor data plate. It is on the compressor housing itself, usually a small silver or white label. It shows the compressor model number, refrigerant type, voltage, and horsepower rating. Photograph this label before ordering.

Your appliance model number. It is on a sticker inside the fridge door on the left wall, or on the rear panel of the appliance. This helps confirm the compressor matches the original specification.

The refrigerant type. The compressor must be rated for the same refrigerant as your appliance. R134a, R600a, and R290 are common types and are not interchangeable. The refrigerant type is on the data plate and on the appliance sticker.

Send us a clear photo of the compressor data plate and your appliance model number. We will confirm the right unit before you spend anything.

Signs your fridge or freezer compressor needs replacing

A compressor fault is usually confirmed by a sparky or appliance technician after other faults have been ruled out. Watch for these signs:

  • The fridge or freezer is not cooling at all and the compressor is not running

  • The compressor starts and then cuts out quickly, repeatedly

  • The compressor runs continuously but the appliance never reaches temperature

  • A sparky or technician has confirmed the compressor has failed

Before ordering a compressor, have a sparky confirm the diagnosis. A compressor is an expensive part. A failed start relay or overload protector can mimic compressor failure and costs a fraction of the price to replace.

Fitting a replacement compressor

Compressor replacement is a job for a registered sparky and in most cases a refrigeration technician. The compressor connects to the refrigerant circuit, which must be evacuated and recharged by a certified person. It also connects to the mains supply.

How do I know if my fridge compressor has failed?

Have a sparky check it. A clicking sound from the back of the fridge, a compressor that won't start, or a fridge that runs but never gets cold are all signs. But a failed start relay can look identical to compressor failure and costs much less to fix. Confirm the diagnosis before ordering.

What does the compressor data plate tell me?

The model number, refrigerant type, voltage, and capacity. You need all of these to match a replacement correctly. A compressor with the wrong refrigerant rating or voltage will not work in your appliance.

Can I replace a fridge compressor myself?

No. Compressor replacement involves the refrigerant circuit which must be handled by a certified refrigeration technician. It also involves mains electrical connections. Releasing refrigerant without certification is illegal in New Zealand.

How long does it take to get a replacement compressor?

It depends on the brand and model. Common Embraco and Secop units we hold in stock. Less common units may need to be sourced. Email us your data plate details and we will check availability and lead time before you order.

Is it worth replacing a compressor or should I buy a new fridge?

Depends on the age and value of the appliance. For a quality fridge under 8 to 10 years old, a compressor replacement is usually worth it. For a budget appliance or one approaching end of life, a new fridge may be better value. Your technician can help you make that call.
