Samsung Fridge Water Filter Replacement: The Complete NZ Guide

That light's been red for weeks, hasn't it.

You've been meaning to sort it. But you're not sure which filter you need. Or you're not sure it matters that much.

It does. More than most people realise.

An expired Samsung water filter doesn't just taste bad. It can actively release the contaminants it's been collecting back into your drinking water. Chlorine. Lead. And in 2025, researchers are increasingly concerned about pharmaceuticals, like trace amounts of ibuprofen, in tap water. Your filter is the last line of defence against all of that.

This guide covers everything you need. Which filter fits your fridge. How to swap it in under two minutes. What NSF certification actually means. And what to watch out for when buying a replacement in NZ.

How Often Should You Replace It?

Every six months. Full stop.

Samsung's recommendation and a solid one. But here's what most people don't know. The red filter light on your fridge isn't testing your water. It's running on a timer. Six months of use and it flips red, whether the water's clean or not.

So if you've got a big household running the dispenser hard every day, replace it sooner. Just two of you using it occasionally? You might stretch to eight months. But don't push past that.

The filter is rated to handle 300 gallons (about 1,135 litres) of water. Once it hits that volume, it's done. Doesn't matter if it's been three months or six.

Bottom line: replace every six months, flush through 2 litres after fitting, and reset the light. You'll never have to think about it again.

What Happens If You Don't Replace It?

Bad things. Slowly.

First, filtration drops. A clogged filter gets less effective at removing chlorine, lead, and sediment. Then water flow slows. Then your ice maker starts underperforming.

And here's the part that surprises people. A saturated carbon filter can start releasing the contaminants it's been storing back into your water. Chlorine. Bacteria. Whatever it caught over the past year.

So skipping the replacement doesn't just mean worse-tasting water. It can mean water that's actively less safe than straight tap water.

Not the outcome you're going for when you installed a filtered fridge in the first place.

What Does a Samsung Water Filter Actually Remove?

More than most people realise. And this is worth understanding before you buy a compatible filter, because not all filters remove the same things.

Genuine Samsung filters are certified to NSF/ANSI standards 42, 53, and 401. Here's what that means in plain English:

NSF Standard

What It Covers

Why It Matters

NSF/ANSI 42

Chlorine taste and odour, sediment

Your water tastes better and smells cleaner

NSF/ANSI 53

Lead, mercury, cysts, turbidity

Removes heavy metals and microorganisms

NSF/ANSI 401

Pharmaceuticals, pesticides, herbicides

Emerging contaminants including trace medications

That NSF 401 certification is the one that matters most in 2025. It covers emerging contaminants that basic filters miss. Pharmaceuticals like ibuprofen and carbamazepine. Pesticides and herbicides from agricultural runoff. If you're on a compatible filter that doesn't carry NSF 401, you're not getting full protection.

When buying a compatible (non-genuine) Samsung filter in NZ, always check it carries NSF/ANSI 42 AND 53 certification at minimum. If it doesn't show certification, don't buy it.

Which Samsung Water Filter Do You Need?

This is where people get tripped up. Samsung has used several different filter designs depending on the model and year. Getting the wrong one is a waste of time and money.

Here are the most common ones in New Zealand:

Filter Code

Type

Common Models

DA29-10105J (HAFEX/EXP)

External twist-fit

Side-by-side RS series, older French door RF series. The most common NZ Samsung filter.

DA29-00020B (HAF-CIN)

Internal push-fit

Newer French door RF series, bottom-mount models

DA29-00003G (HAFIN2/EXP)

Internal twist-fit

Older side-by-side and RS series models

Can't find the code? Check inside your fridge door frame. Samsung prints the compatible filter code on a sticker there on most models. Still stuck? Email us your Samsung model number (the sticker is usually on the inside left wall of the fridge, near the top) and we'll tell you exactly which filter you need before you order.

Genuine vs Compatible Filters: The Honest Answer

Straight up. Genuine Samsung filters are the safest choice.

They're made to exact spec for your fridge. They carry NSF 42, 53, and 401 certification. They come with Samsung's authentication tag so you can verify they're not counterfeit. And they won't void your warranty.

Compatible filters cost less. Many are perfectly good. But here's what to check before you buy one:

  • NSF/ANSI 42 and 53 certification as a minimum — if it's not shown, skip it

  • Fits your exact filter code, not just your fridge brand

  • Made from activated carbon block, not granular carbon

  • Comes from a seller with a return policy

The fake filter market in NZ is real. Counterfeits look identical but use cheap filtration media. Samsung released an authentication tag system for genuine filters exactly because of this. If you're buying genuine, check the tag.

How to Replace Your Samsung Water Filter: Step by Step

No tools needed. Takes two minutes.

External filters (DA29-10105J, DA29-00003G):

  1. Find the filter housing. It's either on the back wall inside the fridge or on the bottom front grille, depending on your model.

  2. Shut off the water supply to your fridge. Then dispense water until the flow stops to relieve pressure. Makes removal much cleaner.

  3. Twist the old filter anti-clockwise a quarter turn. Pull it straight out.

  4. Unwrap the new filter. Align it with the housing.

  5. Push it in and twist clockwise until it locks. You'll feel and hear it click.

  6. Turn the water supply back on.

  7. Run 2 litres through the dispenser. This flushes carbon particles from the new filter. The water may look slightly grey at first. Normal. Keep going.

  8. Reset the filter light. See the reset guide below.

Internal filters (DA29-00020B):

  1. Open the fridge. Find the filter compartment in the upper right corner of the fresh food section. Look for a cap marked LOCK.

  2. Shut off water supply and relieve pressure first (dispense until flow stops).

  3. Press the release button and pull the old filter straight down.

  4. Insert the new filter and push up firmly until it clicks.

  5. Turn water back on. Run 2 litres through dispenser. Reset the light.

6 Signs Your Samsung Filter Needs Replacing Right Now

  • Red or flashing filter light — the obvious one. Don't ignore it.

  • Water tastes or smells off — chlorine, metallic, or just 'flat'

  • Slower water flow — the filter's clogged and restricting the line

  • Ice tastes unusual — the ice maker shares the same filtered line

  • Reduced ice production — clogged filter means less water reaching the ice maker

  • More than 8 months since last change — even if the light hasn't triggered yet

Any one of those? Sort it this week. It's a two-minute fix.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know which Samsung water filter fits my fridge?

Check the label on your current filter. The code starts with DA29 or DA97. Take a photo before you pull it out. If the label is worn off, check the sticker inside the fridge door frame. Samsung prints the compatible filter code there. Still stuck? Email us your fridge model number and we'll find it for you.

How do I reset the filter light after replacing it?

On most Samsung models, hold 'Ice Type' and 'Child Lock' simultaneously for 3 seconds. If your model has a dedicated 'Filter Reset' button, hold that instead. Family Hub models reset through the Fridge Manager app. The light should go green or disappear completely.

My water dispenser is slow after fitting a new filter. What's wrong?

Air is trapped in the new filter. Keep dispensing water until it flows normally. Usually takes 2-3 litres. If it's still slow after that, the filter isn't seated properly. Pull it out and refit it. Make sure it clicks into place. And double-check you've got the right filter code for your exact model.

Can I use a compatible filter instead of a genuine Samsung one?

Yes, but check the certifications first. You want NSF/ANSI 42 and 53 at minimum. If the compatible filter doesn't show those certifications, don't use it. A cheap uncertified filter can let contaminants through and potentially damage your fridge's water system.

Can I run my Samsung fridge without a water filter?

Yes, but you need a bypass plug fitted in the housing. Running it with an empty housing will cause a leak. Bypass plugs are inexpensive and keep the water system closed. We stock them alongside our filter range.

Does the water filter affect the ice maker?

Yes. The ice maker and dispenser share the same filtered water line. A clogged or expired filter slows ice production and affects ice taste. If your ice maker has slowed down or the ice tastes off, the filter is the first thing to check.
