Optibelt A Belts

Optibelt A Section V-Belts NZ: German-Made Drive Belts

Need a V-belt? This collection covers the full range of Optibelt A section belts. Made in Germany, trusted by Kiwi workshops and repairers for decades. A section belts are 13mm wide and 8mm thick, and come in heaps of lengths to suit different pulley setups. For appliance belts, check our full belts collection. For workshop, lawnmower, or compressor jobs, the right A section is below.

About Optibelt A Section V-Belts

A V-belt is a rubber loop with a V-shaped cross-section. Runs between two pulleys. Transfers drive from one shaft to another. The V shape wedges into the pulley grooves, which is why it grips so well without slipping.

Optibelt has been making belts in Germany for over 150 years. The A section (also called classical A) is the industry standard for light industrial and domestic jobs. A means the belt has specific dimensions: 13mm top width, 8mm thickness, 40-degree side angle. For appliance-specific belts like dryer drum belts, those are a different profile, sold in a separate collection.

The belt length is stamped on the belt itself, right after the A. An A42 belt is a 42-inch A section. A60 is 60 inches. Lengths are measured on the inside. Size matters. A belt thats too short won't fit, and a belt that's too long will slip and loose itself pretty quickly.

Fitting a new V-belt usually means loosening the motor mount, slipping the old belt off, fitting the new one, and re-tensioning. Tension is critical. A good belt should deflect about 10 to 15mm under firm thumb pressure at the midpoint.

Signs You Need a New Optibelt A Belt

  • Squealing or chirping under load, that's usually a loose or worn belt slipping on the pulleys. Check tension first, then look for glazing or cracks on the sides.

  • Visible cracks or glazing on the belt surface. Age and heat damage. Once a belt cracks, it will fail soon. Replace it before it snaps.

  • Belt turned inside out or torn off. Seized bearing on a pulley, or debris jammed between belt and pulley. Fix what caused it first, then fit the new belt.

  • Belt stretched or loose even after tensioning. End of life. A properly sized belt should tension up without running out of adjustment.

  • Rubber dust around the pulleys. The belt is shedding. Replace it.

  • Machine vibrates or bogs down under load. Belt slipping because it's worn, loose, or the wrong size.

How to Find the Right Optibelt A Belt

The right belt matches your old belt's length and profile. A section is the profile (13mm wide, 8mm thick). Length is what you need to confirm.

Easiest way: read the code printed on the old belt. Something like A42, A-1080, or 13x1080Li. That's everything we need. Write it down before you throw the belt out.

Old belt missing or unreadable? Measure the inside circumference with a soft tape measure. Bring that measurement to our search bar, or browse the belts collection for the full size list. Common A section codes we stock: A42, A48, A60, A90.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What does the "A" in A42 mean?

A: The A is the profile: 13mm top width, 8mm thickness, 40-degree side angle. The 42 is the length in inches, measured on the inside. So an A42 belt is 42 inches (1066mm) on the inside.

Are Optibelt belts better than generic V-belts?

Optibelt belts are made in Germany to tight tolerances with high-grade rubber and polyester cord. They last longer, run cooler, and slip less than generic belts. Especially under heavy load or in hot environments.

How do I tension a V-belt properly?

Press firmly on the belt at its midpoint with your thumb. It should deflect about 10 to 15mm (half an inch). Too tight and you damage the bearings. Too loose and the belt slips and wears out fast.

Can I use a metric belt in place of an imperial A section?

Only if the cross-section matches. A 13mm x 8mm classical belt is the same as an A section. Check the length in millimetres too: A42 is 1066Li metric. Profile and length match? The belts are interchangeable.

How long does an Optibelt V-belt last?

With correct tension and clean pulleys, thousands of hours in most applications. Heat, oil, and misalignment cut life short. If your belt's dying every year, check the pulley alignment, that's usually the culprit.
