DA29-00020B. DA29-10105J. HAFEX/EXP. HAF-CIN. HAF-QIN.
If you've tried buying a Samsung fridge water filter, you have already hit this wall of codes.
Here is the simple version.
Most Samsung fridges in NZ use one of five filter types. Match your fridge to the right one and you are done. Browse our Samsung water filters once you know your code.
The Five Samsung Filters NZ Fridges Actually Use
Not every Samsung filter is available in NZ. These five cover the large majority of Samsung fridges in Kiwi homes.
1. HAFEX/EXP (DA29-10105J): The most common one in NZ
This covers most Samsung side-by-side and French door fridges sold in NZ before 2020. Twist-fit design. No tools needed. Under two minutes. Cuts chlorine taste and odour.
2. HAF-CIN (DA29-00020B): Newer models with internal housing
Used in newer Samsung fridges with internal filter housing. The code DA29-00020B is often printed right on the cartridge. Don't try swapping this with HAFEX/EXP. Different shape, different fitting. Won't work.
3. HAF-QIN (DA97-08006A): Family Hub and 2018-plus models
Found in some Family Hub fridges from 2018 onward. Push-in cartridge. Completely different form factor from the other two. Always confirm with your model number before ordering.
4. WSF-100: Inline for older fridges
For older Samsung fridges without internal filter housing. Sits in the water line behind the fridge. Less common now but still needed for some older NZ models.
5. DA29-10105J Air Filter: Not a water filter
Despite the similar part number, this is a carbon air filter for inside the fridge. Not the water filter. The numbers look almost the same. The functions are completely different.
How to Find Your Filter Without Guessing
Open your fridge. Look at the existing filter. It is usually top-right of the cavity or inside the door. The code is printed on it.
Filter already gone? Check the inside wall of the fridge compartment for the model sticker. Use that long code (like RF28R7351SR) to match the right filter.
Don't use the name on the front of the fridge. Not specific enough. Use the full code from the inside sticker. Then search our water filters range.
Why Samsung Says 6 Months (And Actually Means It)
Most Samsung filters are rated for 2,200 to 2,800 litres before the carbon is used up.
An average NZ family of four uses around 400 litres a month from the fridge dispenser and ice maker. Do the maths. That is five to seven months. Samsung rounds to six.
After that point the filter stops filtering. You are drinking unfiltered water through a plugged-up cartridge.
NZ Water Quality by Region
Where you live affects how fast your filter runs out.
Auckland water is treated, fairly soft, and filters last close to the full six months.
Christchurch uses aquifer-sourced water. Naturally harder. Change every four to five months.
Marlborough, rural Canterbury, and bore water households should replace every three to four months.
Genuine vs Compatible Samsung Filters
Genuine Samsung filters are NSF-certified and tested to exact flow rates. They cost a bit more but match the original spec.
Quality compatible filters from reputable brands work well too. Look for NSF/ANSI 42 and 53 certification on the packaging. Avoid unbranded, uncertified filters from unknown sources.
We stock both. Browse the Samsung water filter range. No random imports on our shelves.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use any Samsung filter in any Samsung fridge?
No. HAFEX/EXP and HAF-CIN are not interchangeable. Different shapes and fittings. Always match by the code on your existing filter or by your fridge model number.
What happens if I just don't replace it?
Water flow drops. Quality drops. The inlet valve starts fighting the clog. Eventually it fails. That is a $120–$200 repair that a $50 filter would have prevented.
Does the Samsung filter remove fluoride?
No. Standard activated carbon filters handle chlorine, sediment, taste, and odour. Fluoride removal needs reverse osmosis or specialised membrane filtration.
How do I reset the filter light after changing it?
Hold the Filter button for three seconds. On some models it is labelled Child Lock/Filter. The light should go from red or orange back to blue or off.
The Bottom Line
Right filter. Right model. Right code. Under two minutes to fit.
