About Fisher & Paykel Washing Machine Drain Pumps
Your washing machine's drain pump has one job. Push used water out of the bowl and into the laundry waste pipe at the end of each cycle. It runs for a few minutes at the end of each wash and rinse, pushing water up through the drain hose and out. When it stops working, the bowl stays full and the cycle won't move on.
F&P SmartDrive washers (the top loaders with the GW, WA, IW, or MW prefix) use a direct-drive drain pump mounted to the underside of the outer bowl. The pump has its own motor and impeller, separate from the wash motor. The SmartDrive pump assembly is the most commonly replaced part across the range. If your washer runs everyday, that pump takes a beating. Front loaders use a different pump, usually behind the kick panel at the front of the machine.
Drain pumps fail in three common ways, the impeller cracks or loses blades, coins and hair ties jam the impeller and burn out the motor, or the motor windings just wear out after many years. Any of these mean a replacement, not a repair.
Fitting a new pump is a 20 to 40 minute job for a confident DIYer. Turn water and power off first, drain any water in the bowl, then unclip the old pump and clip the new one in.
Signs You Need a New F&P Washing Machine Drain Pump
-
Water stays in the bowl after the cycle ends. Failed drain pump. The most common fault.
-
Cycle stops part-way and the machine beeps. The controller's trying to drain and can't. Check the pump and drain hose.
-
Loud rattle or grinding when the pump runs. Debris (coins, clips, pins) in the impeller. Clear it out. Noise still there? Impeller is damaged.
-
Pump hums but no water moves. Seized impeller or failed motor. Pump needs replacing.
-
Washing machine leaking underneath. Cracked pump housing or a split drain hose connection.
-
Error code pointing to drain on an IW or MW model. Common drain pump fault on SmartDrive washers. Check the code in the manual.
-
Pump works some cycles but not others. Pump motor on its way out. Intermittent failure means full failure is close. Replace it before it strands you mid-wash.
How to Find the Right Fisher & Paykel Washing Machine Drain Pump
F&P has used several different drain pumps across the SmartDrive and front loader ranges. They're not interchangeable. Match the right pump using your washer's model number.
The data plate is on the back of the machine, or sometimes inside the lid on top loaders. F&P washing machine model numbers start with GW, WA, IW, MW, WH, or similar. Something like GWL11 (SmartDrive top loader) or WH8560P1 (front loader).
Also grab the product or build number. It's a 7-digit number (something like 94213) that narrows down the exact production run. For newer models using the Hanning pump instead of the SELNI, the Askoll replacement pump is the right cross. Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is the drain pump the same on SmartDrive and front loader F&P washers?
A: No, completely different pumps. SmartDrive top loaders use a direct-drive pump mounted under the outer bowl. Front loaders use a separate pump accessed from the front kick panel. Match on your model number.
Q: Can I replace an F&P SmartDrive drain pump myself?
A: Yes, but you'll need to tip the machine on its back or side to get at the pump underneath. Turn off water and power, drain the bowl first, have a towel handy. About 30 minutes. Two people makes it easier.
Q: My washer drains most cycles but not all. New pump?
A: Probably. Intermittent drain failures are usually a pump motor on its way out, or debris in the impeller. Check the filter or pump inlet for blockages first. Clear? Replace the pump.
Q: How do I check for blockages before replacing the pump?
A: A lot of F&P front loaders have an access panel at the bottom with a twist-off filter. Unscrew it over a shallow tray (water will come out) and check for coins, clips, or hair. Top loaders, check the drain hose where it leaves the machine.
Q: Are genuine F&P pumps better than compatible?
A: Genuine F&P pumps are built to the original spec and we recommend them where available. Quality compatible pumps work well and cost less, and we test the brands we stock. Product pages tell you which you're buying.
