About Fisher & Paykel Drain Pumps

A drain pump is a small electric pump on the bottom of your dishwasher. At the end of each wash cycle, the pump pushes dirty water out through the drain hose and into your sink waste. When it's working, you hear a brief hum and the water disappears. When it fails, the water sits there.

F&P drain pumps are normally pretty reliable, but they do wear out. Motor windings overheat. Impeller cracks. Bearings seize. And foreign stuff, like broken glass, fruit stones, or bits of cutlery, can jam the impeller and cook the pump. If your DishDrawer model number ends in 8 or 9, the 524922P rotor motor pump is the right one.

On DishDrawers (DD60 and DD90), the drain pump sits on top of the motor module at the back of the drawer. On full-size F&P dishwashers, it's under the tub, accessed from the side or the front. Most pumps are a twist-and-click fit with a single wiring connector. Replacement takes 15 to 30 minutes once you've got the drawer or kick panel out.

Signs You Need a New Fisher & Paykel Drain Pump

  • Standing water in the tub after a cycle. Failed drain pump or a blocked drain hose. Check for blockage first.

  • F1, F8, or drain error code on a DishDrawer. Drain pump fault or blockage. Clear debris, then replace the pump if the code comes back.

  • Loud buzzing or grinding at the drain phase. Debris jammed in the impeller or a failing pump motor.

  • Dishwasher won't finish its cycle. The machine is trying to drain and it's can't. Usually a pump fault.

  • Water leaking under the dishwasher. Cracked pump housing or a failed seal between pump and sump.

  • Burning smell during the drain phase. Pump motor overheating. Stop the cycle and replace before it gives up completely.

  • Pump motor runs but no water moves. Broken impeller or a pump that's lost its prime. Replace.

How to Find the Right Fisher & Paykel Drain Pump

F&P has used several different drain pumps over the years and they don't all cross over. The right part means starting with your dishwasher's model number and ideally the product number too.

For DishDrawers, the data plate is on the inside of the drawer frame, pull the drawer fully out and look on the side rail. For full-size F&P dishwashers its on the edge of the door or inside the tub. Model numbers start with DD (DishDrawer) or DW. Something like DD60SCW9 or DW60CEX1.

Q: How do I know if my drain pump is failing vs just blocked?

A: Check the drain hose and filter for blockage first. Clear whatever you find, run another cycle. Water still not draining, or pump hums without moving water? The pump is dead.

Can I replace a DishDrawer drain pump myself?

Yes. Pull the drawer out, remove the motor module cover, the pump twists off the top. Fit the new one the same way. Kill the power at the isolating switch or the wall before you start.

Why does my dishwasher drain pump keep failing?

Repeat failures usually come from debris. Glass, bones, fruit seeds. They jam the impeller and cook the motor. Rinse plates before loading, check the filter monthly. A pump lasts years when nothing hard goes through it.

Are F&P DishDrawer and full-size dishwasher pumps the same?

No, different pumps. The DishDrawer drain pump is specific to the DD60 and DD90 platform. Full-size F&P dishwashers (DW series) use a different drain pump. Match on your model number.
